PFLAG Anoka-Hennepin Has High Hopes for New District Policy

Today we focus on PFLAG Anoka-Hennepin and their work withinthe Anoka-Hennepin school district. Thedistrict has been in the news recently for their previous school board policywhich stated faculty must remain neutral on topics concerning homosexuality,coupled with the district’s high rates of LGBT-based bullying. The chapterhas become very involved with what’s going on in the community. “We’re veryunique,” says chapter president Michelle Bender about her group of PFLAGers.“There was zero support in the area when [our chapter] first started. Now we’vebeen propelled into youth activities and supporting our youth because of theschool board’s policy.”

Last year, PFLAG Anoka-Hennepin sponsored the local LGBTyouth’s pride event. “There were a lot of great, caring adults there,” Michellereflects, “There was only one person who came to tell the kids how ‘evil’ theywere, and the several local pastors formed a circle around the man, keeping himaway from the kids.” The chapter also provides adult supervision and meetingrooms for the local LGBT youth group, Justin’sGift.

When the Anoka-Hennepin school district decided to changetheir outdated neutrality policy, Michelle read through the new rule’slanguage, and led a discussion. The new policy allows teachers to “foster arespectful learning environment for all students.” “[Discussion about the newpolicy] took up the majority of the time that night! [Members] really feel thatthis policy opens up a lot of doors…it’s a little vague, but it does allowpeople to feel they can speak up this time. It really cracks down on bullying.”The chapter continues to stay involved with the school board’s decisions, andis looking forward to a positive new environment once the policy is fullyunderstood, and goes into effect.

Update from PFLAG Brownsville: Marriage March a Meaningful Success!

OnFebruary 3^rd, PFLAG National’s Focus on the Field blog spotlighted PFLAGBrownsville’s Marriage Equality March which took place on February 10^th.During the march, three couples were married by an officiant from All SoulsUnitarian Universalist Church. Though marriages aren’t recognized legally inthe state of Texas, the ceremonies carried tremendous emotional value. BettyCantu and her partner Siria Jones were among the couples to be married. “Wethought it would be wonderful to get married during an equality march,” Bettysaid. “I’m asking for the same rights as most people have, to stand up there andsay ‘I’m going to marry the woman I love, regardless of whether you approve ornot.’ That meant a lot to me.”

The local news center interviewed Betty Cantu, a member fromthe local chapter, and covered the group’s event. Today we share their reportwith you! PFLAG Portland Black Chapter Celebrates Black History Month

This month is BlackHistory Month, and PFLAG Portland Black Chapter is spreading the word! DawnHolt, President of PFLAG Portland, gives an exciting account of the chapter’s scheduled events:

PFLAG Portland Black Chapter, led by Kahlil Edwards, has afull slate of events planned for Black History Month, nearly one every week!PFLAG Portland Black Chapter was instrumental in bringing Black Pride back tothe many Pride events that are planned each June. And, to continue theawareness of the needs of the Black LGBTQ community in Portland—not to mentionthe excitement—Black Pride now hosts events year-round!
On February 3, Black Pride and PFLAG Portland Black Chapterwill present the movie ChristopherStreet: The Series about a group of black, gay friends in GreenwichVillage. The entire community is invited to view the movie with our chapter.
On February 18, we will hold our regular PFLAG PortlandBlack Chapter meeting; this month’s discussion topic is LGBTQ African Americansthrough the years. So little is known about many of these people because solittle is taught in schools; this is sure to be a lively meeting.

On February 26, PFLAG Portland Black Chapter will host aspecial screening of “OurFamilies”, a video we created in partnership with Oregon’s LGBTQ politicalorganization, Basic Rights Oregon.This video is a must see, and features several members of PFLAG Portland BlackChapter. The “Our Families”series also features Latino/a and Asian families from the community.

Lastly, February marks the third anniversary of the PFLAGPortland Black Chapter, and we’re planning a celebration which pulls out allthe stops for February 26, complete with catering and entertainment. PFLAG Fort Worth Highlights Their 2011 "PFLAG Fort Worth Straight for Equality" Winner

As members and families ofthe LGBT community, we all know that we need straight friends and allies toachieve true equality and respect for all of us. Following the lead of PFLAG National fouryears ago, we started our annual “PFLAG Fort Worth Straight for Equality Award”to recognize a straight member of our community who strongly supports ourdreams and goals.

This year’s winner isGary Randall, who has been tirelessly working behind the scenes almost from thebeginning of the Fort Worth chapter. Henot only has marched in the Dallas and Fort Worth Gay Pride Parades, but he isusually found at the front carrying our banner. He even constructed the frame for the banner. He volunteers at two Samaritan House SupperClubs, ours and his church’s. He singswith the Sam House Choir and volunteers many hours at the AIDS Outreach Center.He is the webmaster for our chapter website and two years ago he produced thevideo tribute to our dear friend Jim Hainline. Finally, he has stronglysupported his life partner, Sharon Salih, in everything she does for PFLAG FortWorth.

There have been twoprevious winners: In 2009, Joel Bailey of Fort Worth and First JeffersonUnitarian Universalist Church was chosen because he is a tireless and passionateadvocate who never fails to promote LGBT issues in his community and inchurch. In 2010 Rita Cotterly was chosento honor her many contributions to the LGBT community, including being afounding member of the Fort Worth Chapter of PFLAG, and her outstanding work asa sexuality educator and counselor.”

PFLAG Montana Fights to Keep Schools Safe

On January 27^th, PFLAG Montana leaders met withstaff from all three of their members of Congress—Senator Tester, Senator Baucusand Representative Rehberg—to urge them to support SNDA (H.R. 998/ S.555) andSSIA (H.R. 1648/ S.506). Pete Shea, the state coordinator for PFLAGMontana, helped to schedule and organize this meeting. “The meeting wentextremely well,” said Pete. “About 15 people were present… the young people [inour group] spoke exceptionally well, describing what they experience at school…the meetings were positive on all accounts!”

Pete recentlytraveled to Montana’s state capitol where he spoke to the task force for thestate Board of Public Education. “They are in the process of revising stateschool policy,” Pete says, “They have already added ‘sexual orientation’ as arevision to one of their bullying policies, which makes me feel like our job ishalf way done.” He added, “[But] I requested that they also add ‘genderidentity and expression’… I received numerous positive responses.”

The PacificNorthwest is also planning to host a regional conference, hosted by PFLAG Hamilton-Bitterroot and PFLAG Montana, from September 21^st to the 23^rd.The conference, called “Big Sky/Big Dreams,” will feature several presentations fromnational LGBT advocates, including staff from PFLAG National. “Change ishappening,” Pete writes in his letter to Montana Senators, “People arebeginning to see and understand that [LGBT] discrimination is wrong.”

PFLAG Twin Cities’ Cultivating Respect Conference a Huge Success!

PFLAG Twin Cities’ “CultivatingRespect: Creating Safe Schools for All Students” conference débuted at theGiddens Alumni Learning Center at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota onJanuary 20^th. The event was organized by PFLAG Twin Cities’ planningboard and members, and left participants asking, “What are you going to do nextyear!”

“People feel a real need for this type of conference. Theydidn’t want us to stop with this one,” said Nate Stephens, the CommunicationsCoordinator for the conference and awards dinner. “One of the things I wasreally struck with was that we were able to give educators, parents, andstudents some really concrete tools, skills, and methods for addressingbullying and inequality in classrooms…but what people came away with that wasmaybe even more resonant was the emotional impact; a better understanding andempathy for the issue.”

The key note speaker for the day was Jamie Nabozny. Nabozny is known forwinning legal cases against three of his middle and high school principals forfailing to address his complaints of bullying due to his sexual orientation.Nabozny’s story of pain and triumph has been made into a film titled Bullied. “This film offers hope tostudents who are being harassed and should inspire educators to live up totheir responsibility to stop the bullying that is shattering lives,” he says.More information on Bullied can be found on the SouthernPoverty Law Center. Hiskey note speech focused on the importance of a safe school environment forall students. “When bullying is addressed in schools, we punish the bullies,”said Nabozny, "…it’s not working. We need a comprehensive approach todealing with bullies…it’s time to recognize that it’s a basic human right to besafe in our school.”

The conference also included a vendor resource fair in whichPFLAG Twin Cities and PFLAG National were represented.Other organizations included: Family Equality Council, Minnesotans United forAll Families, Project 515, American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota,Out4Good, GLBTQ Online High School, OutFront MN, Out for Equity, Trans YouthSupport Network, The Family Partnership, AMAZE, HRC-Welcoming Schools, MNPTA,YPC, One Voice, MnSOC and the Pride Institute.

Two hundred people attended, bravely battling intense winterconditions to arrive at the conference safely. Teachers, principles, schoolpersonnel, students, parents and GSAs were among the attendees: “I feel like wehad a really well rounded representation of people involved in the issues,”said Nate. The many sessions included resources for combating classroombullying, the power of a personal story, physical and mental health topics, areligion panel, and a discussion on the proposedamendment to ban marriage equality in Minnesota and the effects it may behaving on how local students are treating each other.

Within the conference program, PFLAG Twin Cities includedcopies their “Safe School Pledge,” which was signed by Rep. Karen Clark; Sen.Chris Eaton; Sen. Al Franken; Rep. Melissa Hartman; Sen. Ron Latz; Rep. TinaLiebling; Sen. John Marty; and Sen. Kathy Sheran. The pledge concludes with adeclaration to make schools safe for all students and an affirmation of theright to feel safe, and was a great message of public support for theconference’s mission. Sen. Al Franken even stopped by to speak at theconference and mingle with attendees!

The awards dinner featured many entertainers such as KyleRooker, a young student who performedLady Gaga's Born this Way on AndersonCooper after discussing his experiences with homophobic bullying, andhonored several leaders who were recognized for their activism in 2011.Award-winners included AMAZE (2012 Outstanding Organization), Blake School’sJustice League (2012 Outstanding Student Led Organization), Tammy Aaberg(Robert and Joyce Curoe Outstanding Parent Award) and Dr. Walter Robers Jr. (2012Outstanding Educator). “People learned so much!” said Nate, “It was thestart of many great conversations to come.”

PFLAG Member Mayor Dennis Coombs Signs on with Mayors for Marriage

Today we hear from Jean Hodges of PFLAG Boulder! Jean took note of an exciting development in Longmont, Colorado and reached out to PFLAG National to spread the news:

“Dennis Coombs, a PFLAG member and spouse of Kristen Kinard, our local PFLAG president, recently stuck his neck out for equality. Elected mayor of Longmont in November, Coombs (D) became the second Colorado mayor (Denver's Mayor Michael Hancockwas the first) to sign on to “Mayors for the Freedom to Marry,” a bipartisan list of U.S. mayors supporting marriage equality and equal rights for all.

Although Mayor Coombs’ action was a personal decision and fully within his first amendment rights, he is now the center of controversy in Longmont among those who are staunch defenders of Longmont's historically traditional, conservative community. Times are changing and Longmont citizens are now discussing a hot button social issue, thanks to the courage of one man's convictions and leadership. Thank you, Dennis, for standing up for a position that is on the right side of history. You show us what a brave ally can do to make a difference!”

New Hampshire: A Small State with a Big Mission

Today our story comesfrom PFLAG Northeast Regional Director Bobbie Barry working with PFLAG NewHampshire. Marriage equality was passed in New Hampshire in 2009. This year,many legislators are seeking to take away the right to marry. Luckily, PFLAG NHhas been following this issue every step of the way, and is working tirelesslyto ensure that loving families are kept together!

“PFLAG NewHampshire is our state council, representing all New Hampshire chapters,and does the bulk of the activist work. Collaboration is what it's all about inNH since we are such a small state! PFLAG NH has been collaborating with Standing UP for New HampshireFamilies which is a statewide advocacy group, and with MonadnockLive Free and Equal, a coalition from south western New Hampshire. Here insouth western NH (near the Vermont and Massachusetts borders) we are workingwith several local and welcoming churches (UU, UCC, American Baptist,Episcopal), Keene State College, the Women's Softball League, and otherindividuals to build awareness around the need for maintaining marriageequality in NH. The reality is that many people from rural areas are notat all attuned to this issue. Many people seem to think that the marriageequality is not important, and often really don't know why it's even beingdiscussed.

Our awareness work has been focused on reminding the generalpublic about what equal rights mean and how important it is for our friends andfamily to marry the person they love.

Our members continue calling legislators, urging them tovote against repeal. Identifying where each of the 400 legislators standon this issue is a huge task as they often will not publically commit to howthey will vote. Many feel that some legislators are afraid to vote againsttheir traditional party lines, especially because Speaker of the House, BillO’Brien, has been so vocal about his personal, opposing, opinion.

Fortunately, we have a number of "high profile"people state wide who have joined the "Standing Up for NH Families"campaign and are speaking publicly about the need to keep marriage equality inNH. For example, we have the CEO of Stonyfield Yogurt, CEO of Segway, StateUniversity System leadership, dozens of religious leaders including Bishop GeneRobinson, the retired CEO of NH Charitable Trust, CEO of C&S Grocers, andmany others who are putting pressure on legislators to leave this law alone. This part of our equality campaign is quietly making big impressionsbehind the scenes. Most of our city newspapers have written editorials infavor of marriage equality.

Manchester, our largest city, is heavily populated withCatholics and is frequently visited by the Catholic Bishop of NH’s staff, who testifyagainst marriage equality during state hearings. That section of thestate is our biggest challenge, and is home to the most legislators who seem tobe in support of a marriage repeal. I have found the talking points provided byPFLAG National to be helpful in speaking about why marriage equality isimportant. There has not been a vote on the marriage repeal in the stateHouse so far. We’re working the phones like crazy people, hitting upon keyplaces, and asking them to call legislators who are on the fence. Each day wegather new intelligence on our opposition, and we continue to stand strongagainst those who want to take rights away from loving New Hampshire families.”

PFLAG Brownsville Plans Marriage Equality March for February

Valentine’s Day is approaching, and PFLAG Brownsville inTexas is looking to celebrate with a day of love, activism and awareness! Thechapter has planned a marriage equality march on FRIDAY, February 10^that the Veteran’s Memorial Park to Cobblehead’s Bar and Grill, whereMinister John Sutterby of All Souls Universalist Church will perform same-sexmarriage ceremonies on the deck of the restaurant, facing the water. Themarriages are more than merely a declaration of commitment and love—they are anact of civil disobedience. When an ordained minister performs a marriage, itbecomes public record. “These are not mock weddings, but real weddings with areal minister,” says Yolanda Speece, president of PFLAG Brownsville. In otherwords, these marriages will be legal and binding when Texas passes its marriageequality law.

Yolanda has given a modest estimate of 100 attendees so far,and knows of many couples who have already signed up to be married. “It’soverwhelming how much buzz has been created about this event!” Yolanda said.“We may even have some people come from out of town!” The march will begin atthe Veteran’s Memorial near the Brownsville Community Library. It will go through the Memorial and continuedown Central Boulevard toward Cobblehead’sBar and Grill where everyone is invited to join: “The owner, Joe Kenney,has been a real ally to our chapter…we love him. He’s phenomenal.”

The day is not only one of commitment and relationships, butone of education. “We’re trying to raise awareness for [marriage equality],”Yolanda expressed. “When you raise awareness concerning this issue, it gives ita human quality.” Texas does not allow same-sex couples to marry legally in thestate, and PFLAG Brownsville wants to ensure it isn’t among the last to legalizemarriage equality, as it waswith anti-miscegenation laws (Loving v. Virginia-1967). “Even though it isnot legal in the state of Texas to marry someone of the same sex, we believethis is making a statement about the current policy banning same sex marriage”,she said, “The message is that despite the laws, people want to marry and finda way to do it, one way or another.” ThoughYolanda recognizes the opposition she and her chapter face from variousorganizations, she knows the chapter will persevere: “If we [attendees] rallyaround equality, then their families will want to step in and be supportive aswell…we want people to think about marriage as a civil right, not a specialright! We’re making a lot of people think. By doing so, we are bringing awareness to the fact that this is aboutdepriving a portion of the population of something many of us take for granted.”

PFLAG Brownsville’s past events have included Margaritas onthe River, a fundraiser which honors LGBT activists on the first Friday in Juneeach year; a marriage equality march with Equality Texas on October 14^th;and a successful speaker’s series which has included allies from many localcommunity and non-profit organizations. “There are mainstream agencies thatwill help the LGBT community if they need it. The PFLAG Empowerment series isan opportunity to reinforce that although the community may not appear veryLGBT friendly, there are allies and organizations within it that are indeedvery supportive and willing to help when the need arises!”

PFLAG Baltimore Makes Presence Known at Maryland Marriage Equality Senate Hearing

On Tuesday afternoonthe Maryland State Senate held its first hearing on the state’s newly revised marriage equality legislation SB214, and PFLAG Baltimore was ready to show theirsupport! The chapter’s website alerted local PFLAGers about the upcoming sessionand asked that they wear red in support of the revised marriage equality bill. DuringMaryland’s debate of the 2011 Civil Marriage Bill, PFLAG Baltimore filled thehearing room with a flood of red supporters, which had a great positiveinfluence on the proceedings that day. This year, they hoped for an even largerpresence. PFLAG Baltimore President Mark Patro and other PFLAG members plannedto take the day off from work to show their support for the legislation.

PFLAG Baltimore at 2011 Civil Marriage Bill Hearing

Hundreds ofpeople attended the four-hour hearing in which state senators heard arguments bothin favor of and opposed to the proposed state marriage equality law. GovernorMartin O’Malley, who introduced the revised bill last monthas a part of his overall legislative platform for the year, spoke first, saying that the bill“balances civil rights and religious protections” and that marriage equality isa matter of “human dignity.”

Radio personalities and relationshipcounselors Bob and Lori Hollander(whointerviewed Judy Gaver and Matthew Thorn of PFLAG Howard County last January)shared the story of their gay son and lesbian daughter. The PFLAG couple from Columbia/Howard County urged the senators to supportmarriage equality, saying, “Maryland doesn’t allow [our children] to live theirmost cherished dream to marry the one they love… we need to uplift ourchildren, promote those things that make their lives happier and morefulfilling.” Many other straight alliestestified, including Reverend John Preswell who said that he and his girlfriend“refuse to marry in Maryland until it’s legal [for LGBT couples tomarry].” Straight ally Sheila Durantsaid that after befriending a lesbian she realized “LGBT issues are [her]issues” too.

Tuesday’shearing marks the beginning of a long journey for Maryland marriage equalityadvocates, as the House version of this bill has not yetbeen introduced , andthe bill will pass through two committees, instead of the usual one. Meanwhile,the opposition continues to spread misinformation about sexual orientation,LGBT parenting, and marriage equality. We must continue to educate about thetruth behind marriage equality and human rights. Together, we can continue tochange hearts and minds in Maryland.

Youth Speaker Discusses Bullying and LGBT Rights with PFLAG Hamilton/Bitterroot

In Hamilton, Montana, HamiltonHigh School senior Alyx Steadman spoke at Hamilton/Bitterroot Valley PFLAG’smeeting this past Thursday. Alyxserves on the Youth Advisory Council for the Trevor Project—an organizationwhich seeks to help prevent LGBT youth suicide —and now dedicates his time tospreading a message of hope for anyone who has been bullied or rejected for whothey are. “Sometimes, all it takes to prevent a tragedy is having someone totalk to….Isolation is something that can be geographical or social,” said Alyxto RavalliRepublic, a local news source. “Sometimes it is easier to talk to someoneyou don’t know, than someone you know,” he said, “Especially for young people.”

Alyx plans to team up with Hamilton/BitterrootValley PFLAG to form an LGBTQ Youth Group which would meet two times amonth in Hamilton. “We had six people show up last time, and that’s a lot forthe first meeting and for the Bitterroot,” Alyx said hopefully. Alyx is alsoplanning on helping his school district adopt an anti-bullying policy whichincludes protections for sexual orientation.

PFLAG Hamilton/Bitterroot is also planning to meet withSenator Tester’s in-state office this week to discuss the important StudentNon-Discrimination Act (S. 555), which would prohibit the discrimination ofstudents based upon actual or perceived gender identity or sexual orientation.

We are thrilled to see young leaders sharing goals withtheir local PFLAG allies, and excited to learn how this partnership progressesin the future! Matt Thorn and Judy Gaver Featured in Radio Talk Show

On January 16^ththe radio talk show “Black, White &Gay in America—The Human Side” featuredPFLAG Howard County President Matt Thorn and the facilitator of PFLAG HowardCounty’s “Parents’ Forum,” Judy Gaver. Catherine Hyde, the coordinator ofPFLAG Howard County’s “Transgender Network,” and PFLAG Howard County member JuneHorner called into the show, making impactful guest appearances.

“Black, White & Gayin America” talks about “being [LGBT] from a religious, racial, legal, and psychologicalperspective and most importantly, from the human side.” Matthew Thorn and JudyGaver were given welcoming introductions which detailed their extensive work asactivists and allies to the LGBT community. When asked about their stories,Matt described coming out at a Catholic university--“It’s a process…it’s adifferent process for any individual.”—and how close he has remained to hiscollege friends. Judy discussed how she felt after realizing her son was gay. “Iwas sure of three things,” Judy said. “God still loved him, because that’s theGod I learned about…the God of love. I was sure he had not made the choice [tobe gay], and that I loved him unconditionally.”

Judy talked about theParents’ Forum, a part of the PFLAG-HC chapter which is “more of a support typegroup” which has “new parents just about every month.” “It’s just a greatsource of comfort to be in the company of folks who understand what you’refeeling,” Judy confides, “I wasn’t always where I am now. I went to that group,shed a lot of tears, and had a lot of people help me through my journey.”

During the show therewere many callers, some with challenging questions about homophobia, same-sexcouples and adoption, and the foundations of our country. To one caller who “didn’tbuy” the idea of acceptance, suggesting that it caused children to becomebi-curious, Matt reminded listeners that “bisexuality is a real thing.” Hespoke of the importance of tolerance overcoming bigotry and about children whoneed a supportive environment in which to grow. “That’s what PFLAGorganizations are for!” he said. “We want to put people in these little boxeswhere they fit very nicely,” Judy stated, “It’s important to recognize that weall don’t fit into those little categories so easily.”

Catherine Hyde calledinto the show to tell her story, and informed listeners that “our gender isintrinsic…it’s something that’s in our brains. We must help society understand,so our kids have a better chance.” She suggested listeners go to pflag.orgor pflagmd.org for more information. JuneHorner called in to express how much PFLAG helped her after her child came out.“I cannot tell you how isolated and confused I felt…Until I found [PFLAG], Iwas beside myself.”

PFLAG Oshkosh Brings Its Community Together to Stop Hate

In the wake of an unexpected LGBT hate crime, PFLAG Oshkosh is bringing membersof the community together to raise awareness, call for justice, and work tokeep their neighborhood safe for all residents.

The crime, which took place on Christmas day, was committedagainst a young 20-year-old man outside of a local tavern. His attackers, two20 year-olds who thought the young man was “hitting on” them, have beenarrested and charged with battery causing bodily harm. The young man suffered abroken jaw and underwent emergency brain surgery after the beating. “Thisparticular incident is one of our worst nightmares,” stated Joe Wiedenmeier,President of PFLAG Oshkosh, in an article from TheNorthwestern.

On Tuesday, January 10^th, the Oshkosh Chapterheld a public meeting to discuss the incident. Approximately 30 peopleattended, including educators, clergy, parents, middle and high schoolstudents, gay and straight men and women, and concerned Oshkosh citizens. Thetopics ranged from school-based efforts to expanded community awareness ofharassment and mistreatment against certain characteristics, including sexualorientation and gender identity. Before leaving the meeting space, everyone inattendance was invited to sign a statement which illustrated the signee’sbelief that additional preventative work needs to be done by all residents ofOshkosh.

“The crime was not only an assault on the victim—itrepresents an attack on everything that our community should stand for,” saysJoe Wiedenmeier, PFLAG Oshkosh’s President. “PFLAG [Oshkosh] will continue towork toward educating and informing the public on LGBTQ issues…our meetingswill remain open to the public, and we welcome anyone willing to help makeOshkosh and our community a safer and more inclusive place to live, work andspend time.”

The chapter is exploring new ways to raise awareness aboutlocal LGBTQ issues, and already has some ideas for keeping the conversationalive. PFLAG Oshkosh has also created a change.orgpetition similar to the statement signed by participants in January, andcan be signed online and shared with others. “Our hope is to bring peopletogether so that an incident like this, and all those that are reported, won’thappen again,” Joe summarized. And, with their passionate mission and unwaveringdedication, we know PFLAG Oshkosh will continue to make a lasting impact ontheir community.

PFLAG North Iowa Helps Local GSAs Thrive

In celebration ofNational GSA Day this Wednesday, our story comes from Dean Genth of PFLAG NorthIowa:

Our PFLAG North Iowa Chapter has enthusiastically supportedthe development and growth of 4 different GSA Chapters in our region.

We were contacted by individuals at two area high schoolsand two local colleges. Our chapter has helped the GSA chapters findspeakers through our PFLAG Chapter's Speaker's Bureau program. We haveincorporated GSA membership into our Wednesday even socials which our Chaptersponsors. The socials are a great place for the GLBT community and their alliesto gather at a local restaurant, eat and socialize.

One of our most successful advocacy efforts was the “GAY?FINE BY ME” t-shirt project. We sponsored a local GSA with 400 of these t-shirts. The purple t-shirts were distributed to 400 students (free of charge forwearing one all day) at 7:15 AM and were gone in 20-30 minutes! The GSA Advisortold us the high school was a 'sea of purple' that day, and that the event hadgone extremely well. This high school chapter is thriving as a result andGLBT advocacy and education is moving in a very positive direction among thestudent body.

At one of the local colleges, we also sponsored the “GAY?FINE BY ME” t-shirt project; this was a very positive event at the campus (aLutheran College). We are proud to serve as mentors for this collegechapter which has won a state-wide award for “Best Collegiate GSA” two years ina row. Mason City High School won the Best High School Chapter award.

PFLAG Chapters can make a big difference by serving asmentors for these organizations and being the grass roots support system andhelp that these organizations need. We can help them with fund-raisingideas, programming, speakers and advocacy projects. These GSAorganizations also can aid the local chapter in manning tables at Pride Festsand participate in parades and other activities where LGBT folks need to bepresent. It’s a mutually beneficial partnership.

Thank you Dean and themembers of PFLAG North Iowa for mentoring these youth, sponsoring them in theiradvocacy efforts, and supporting them as they work to make their communities asafer place to live!

PFLAG Kansas City and Upcoming Program Featured in Camp Magazine

On December 8, 2011 PFLAG Kansas City wasfeatured in Camp Magazine, KansasCity’s “Voice for the LGBT and Allied Communities.” The article’s author,Bradley Osborn, praises PFLAG-KC as an “affirming, safe, relaxing space toshare stories in confidence” with “educational, entertaining, and proactive”programming. “There may be no place more welcoming than a monthly PFLAGmeeting.”

Osborn also wrote about PFLAG-KC’sthen-upcoming meeting on January 8^th. The speakers for the monthwere Fritz and Etta Mae Mutti who spoke about their two sons, their work withHIV/AIDS awareness, and how their personal story has opened hearts and minds. “Theprogram presented by the Muttis drew a much larger crowd at our monthly meetingthan usual,” said Ruth Cooper, a board member of PFLAG-KC.

The Muttis becameinvolved in HIV/AIDS work after the tragic death of their two sons, both gay,and both HIV-positive. Fritz and Etta Mae became committed to showing othersthat “persons with HIV/AIDS [need] the love and care of family, community andchurch, regardless of sexual orientation.” In 2004 the couple was namedco-chairs of the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund—Fritz was a retired bishopof the church—and the two of them served for four years. Together they helpedraise money for AIDS education, prevention, care and treatment, and increasedawareness about the disease. Franz and Etta Mae have seen the church becomemore open over the years, and recognize signs of progress for the acceptance ofLGBT people.

“Our chapter was very grateful to Camp Magazine for reaching the larger Kansas City community and featuringthe program topic and our PFLAG-KC chapter on a whole page in the December[issue],” Ruth said, “When the LGBT community supports one another and workstogether, it’s a win-win situation.”

Greater Boston PFLAG Highlights Hundreds of Inclusive Congregations

Our story today comes from Greater Boston PFLAG’s Inclusive Congregations Coordinator J.R. Boucher:

“Greater Boston PFLAG has compiled a listing of inclusive congregations in Massachusetts. An inclusive congregation is one that has gone through a deliberative process resulting in a decision to welcome LGBT persons into the life and work of the congregation. The expression “inclusive congregation” was chosen because it is applicable to communities of faith from many traditions. Since its inception in 2004, we have listed about 300 Massachusetts congregations from 16 denominations.

This project was inspired by a PFLAG Sacramento project, described in the Spring 2003 issue of PFLAGpole. Sacramento presents plaques to selected inclusive congregations each quarter. We decided to present “Certificates of Appreciation” to all inclusive congregations within the Greater Boston region. In our certificate we adopted Sacramento’s wording, “For the congregation’s commitment to welcoming and affirming gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. By embracing these individuals, you have created a safe space for all to worship. We honor this witness to the true spirit of religious faith and practice.” Thank you, Sacramento.

Indianapolis PFLAG Collaborates With Community Organizations to Show "Bullied" - AN UPDATE

Today we have an update on this story, from Annette Siegel Gross from Indy PFLAG:

On Tuesday, December 13th, Indianapolis PFLAG, PNC Bank and the Immigrant Welcome Center showed the film "Bullied" to members of the community.

The film tells the story of Jamie Nabozny, a teenager boy in Wisconsin, who was relentlessly bullied by several students in his high school. Even though Jamie's mother spoke to the principal on quite a few occasions, nothing was done by the school to stop the bullying. In desperation, Jamie attempted suicide unsuccessfully and ran away from home. Finally, totally frustrated, Jamie and his parents sued the school district. After a court trial, Jamie was awarded $900,000.00 in damages.

Following the film, a panel of five people shared their expertise regarding bullying. Graham Brinklow, Youth Outreach Coordinator of Indiana Youth Group, spoke about his role in creating Gay-Straight Alliances in Indiana schools and how these groups play a huge role in combating bullying against LGBT youth. Kyle Casteel, a teen who attends IYG, spoke about the Gay-Straight Alliance at his school and how important it is to him. Jamie Martindale is a teacher at Pike High School and has been the Faculty Advisor of that school's GSA for 7 years. Jamie discussed the GSA at Pike High, as well as how a high school can set one up.

Lynn A. Highley, MSW, LCSW, is a social worker. Lynn spoke about the clinical effects of bullying on families. Finally, Travis Brown aka Mr. MOJO told us that it's not only the children being bullied who need help - the bystanders and the bullies themselves need guidance.
With an attendance of almost 50 people, we were very pleased with the turnout. Indy PFLAG, PNC Bank and the Immigrant Welcome Center all send out invitations and notices to various groups and schools in the community. Teachers, social workers, therapists, psychologists, parents and children all were in attendance. We had a sign-in sheet so we can send them information about future events.

One of the benefits of showing this film and having the panel discussion was that one of the private schools in the city is now interested in starting a GSA. In addition, the audience now has a more in-depth understanding of bullying and how it affects children and parents. I'm sure that many of the teachers and counselors in attendance will have new information and tools to bring back to their schools.

Because we collaborated with PNC Bank and the Immigrant Welcome Center, we were able to reach out and invite more people in the community to this event. In addition, these two groups have learned much more about LGBT issues and we can now count on them as Straight Allies. We hope to work with them again in the future.

PFLAG Abingdon-Washington County's Community Participation

Today we hear from Jason Willis, President of the PFLAG Abingdon-Washington County chapter:

PFLAG Abingdon-WashingtonCounty (PFLAG AWC), located in the Southwest corner of Virginia, participated in two community parades on Saturday, Dec. 3, in Abingdon and Glade Spring. Ten members participated, plus three guests (including Baker the dog).

Board members Jason Willis, Patty Debusk, and Don Thompson organized their chapter's participation in the parades.

The community is somewhat conservative, and PFLAG AWC turned one on November 11th, so a key initiative has been simply getting the word out that they exist as a resource for the LGBTQ community, as well as their family and friends.

The parades provided a perfect platform for their awareness campaign, with over 3000 spectators, as well as engendering good will in the community. The 10-foot tall snowman was a hit, as well as Baker, the dog of a member, with the kids.

Next year, PFLAG AWC plans to participate as well, with a bigger and better display, making it an annual PFLAG event.

PFLAG Portland Black Chapter: The Our Families Campaign

PFLAG Portland Black Chapter joined with Basic Rights Oregon in their Our Families community education campaign. Our Families is a public education campaign that seeks to raise visibility and public support of LGBT families of color through storytelling, media tools and educational events.

PFLAG Portland Black Chapter was not only a part of the amazing series of videos that were created to highlight the trials and triumphs experienced by LGBT people of color, but also signed on to a public statement of support that was published in local media outlets around National Coming Out Day in October 2011.

By being apart of this incredible campaign and raising awareness around LGBT people of color we are continuing to build support of straight people of color in our communities.

Indianapolis PFLAG Collaborates With Community Organizations to Show "Bullied"

PFLAG Indianapolis' Annette Gross reports in on a coalation event coming up later this month:

This past June, a representative of PNC Bank contacted me, wanting to collaborate with Indianapolis PFLAG on a project. So Jan Nichols, chapter president, and myself met with Fiorella Gambetta, Vice President of Multicultural Business Development - IN and Liaison to the Hispanic Community.

There have been too many school children harmed due to bullying in our community in recent months, and for this reason we decided to show the film "Bullied," with a panel discussion following the film, including one of the Outreach Coordinators from Indiana Youth Group, a high school teacher who sponsors a GSA, and a social worker.

Fiorella enlisted the assistance of Terri Morris Downs, Executive Director of the Immigrant Welcome Center. Now we had three organizations planning this event which also meant that we had more possibilities for outreach.
Fiorella made up an invitation to send out via e-mail. Last night I began sending these invitations to all the area high school guidance counselors, psychologists and social workers. I also sent invitations to the teachers and professors in the Departments of Education and Psychology at Butler University, IUPUI and Indianapolis University, as well as the LGBT student groups at these institutions. In addition, I sent a news release to area newspapers. With Fiorella and Terri sending invitations to their contacts, we hope to have a large audience.

As of today, our panel has increased to four. I received an e-mail from Indianapolis native Travis Brown. Mr. Brown travels across the country speaking to students about bullying. He goes by the name of "Mr. Mojo" and is quite inspiring. He had heard about our program and asked if he could also serve on the panel. After looking at his website we accepted his request and now we have four panelists. In addition, two or three youth from Indiana Youth Group will be telling their personal stories about bullying they have endured.
“Bullied” was produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center. It is designed to help administrators, teachers and counselors create a safer school environment for all students, not just those who are gay and lesbian. It is also intended to help all students understand the terrible toll bullying can take on its victims, and to encourage students to stand up for their classmates who are being harassed. We hope that by showing this film, we will create awareness about this virus that is seeping into our own community. And it is wonderful that we can partner with other community organizations and businesses to reach this audience.

The film will be shown on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the John H. Boner Community Center, 2236 East Tenth Street, Indianapolis.

California PFLAGers were warmly welcomed by Congressman Brad Sherman and his staff on Lobby Day. He has been a 100% supporter of our issues for many years. I had the good fortune to lead our group and introduced PFLAG Mom and new National Board Member Marsha Aizumi. She shared her personal story, as did Chris Thomas, a student from Opportunities for Learning (OFL) Public Charter School.

Among the smiling contingent were Lynette and Larry Sperber (PFLAG LA members), Lisa Dillon from the LA Gay and Lesbian Center and Barbara Pisetsky, PFLAG South Orange County President. Others joining in from OFL included Molly Sircher, Lead Teacher, Danitza Pantoja, School Psychologist, and students Luna Livingston and Josh Connolly.

PFLAG Columbia-Howard County Inspires Gender Identity/Expression Non-Discrimination Bill

Thanks to PFLAG Columbia-Howard County, Gender Rights Maryland (GRMD), and support from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), four out of the five Howard County council members pre-filed a bill that would add gender identity and gender expression to the non-discrimination code of Howard County. The members of PFLAG Columbia-Howard approached the council to talk to them about the issue of discrimination against the transgender and gender non-conforming community—and the council members took notice. “We felt that they made a convincing case that this population needed protection from discrimination,” democrat council member Courtney Watson of Ellicott City said.

PFLAG and GRMD were involved in the formation of the bill’s language, and were resources to the council members during the drafting process. Catherine Hyde, the coordinator of PFLAG Howard County’s Transgender Parent Network, and Heath Goisovich, the co-chairperson of the PFLAG Howard County’s Political Advocacy Committee, received public recognition for their assistance and dedication to constructing this important policy.

Maryland currently does not have a non-discrimination policy for gender identity, though 15 states and the District of Columbia currently do. According to GRMD, 63% of Marylanders support adding gender identity/expression protections. The need for the legislation is clearly apparent; one in five transgender people in Maryland have lost a job due to discrimination, and 12% have become homeless. Catherine spoke to the Baltimore Sun on the importance of these protections: "As parents of transgender children we want the same thing for our children as all parents want: we want them to be happy, to get a productive job, and to move out and support themselves. This bill will make that dream more possible for transgender children in Howard County, who are at much higher risk for suicide, unemployment and homelessness.”

The bill that councilmembers Courtney Watson (District 1), Calvin Ball (District 2), Jen Tarrasa (District 2) and Mary Kay Sigaty (District 4) introduced on October 27^th would prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression in: housing, law enforcement, public accommodations, financing, employment, and health and social services. The bill will most likely be heard by the public on November 21^st and GRMD is currently working with the councilmembers to formulate their testimonies for the hearing. Please mark your calendar and show your support at the hearing on November 21^st for the non-discrimination legislation.

PFLAG Salt Lake City Co-Sponsors PINK DOT “Freedom to Love” Event

Kathy Godwin from PFLAG Salt Lake City shares her story of Utah’s Pink Dot event as community members celebrate the “freedom to love” for all people:

This year for National Coming Out Day, Oct 11, 2011, Utah celebrated by creating a large human Pink Dot. PFLAG Salt Lake City was part of the organizing committed to create a campaign of “Support, Love, and Courage.”

The event was targeted at the LGBT Allies in the community to give them a tangible way to show their support, love and courage for their LGBT loved ones, friends and co-workers. A website was opened with a movie trailer of what “Support, Love and Courage – Pink Dot Utah”, was about, and what it meant to be an ally.

Many of us wore PINK DOT buttons around town, inviting people to ask “What is Pink Dot?” On our website, www.pinkdotut.org, we included a short film, statements of support, and a call of courage to attend our short event at 5:00pm on October 11^th.

The night of the event approximately 3,000 people arrived at the Spring Mobile Ballpark parking lot, all wearing pink. The event host was Kurt Bestor, an Emmy award winning composer and local musical celebrity. He was joined by one of the local anchors of FOX news, Hope Woodside, who served as the co-host and has been awarded best TV anchorwoman for the past thirteen years.

The night before the event we had our PFLAG Salt Lake City meeting, where we watched the film "Lead with Love" produced by Dr. David Heubner of the University of Utah. He and Susan Lyons, clinical social worker and PFLAG mom spoke about the film, the value of family acceptance, and resources within our community. The treat for the evening was PINK DOT mini cupcakes, with chocolate kisses on the top!

It was a great event with many PFLAG members present from both Salt Lake City and PFLAG Ogden Chapters.

About Pink Dot: Pink Dot started in Singapore in 2009 as a way for LGBT supporters to visually show their support. The message is “freedom to love,” and their short campaign video soon went viral on the internet. Pink Dot is a pro-family and affirming event which focuses on the importance of universal acceptance for LGBT people. The movement hopes to create an environment for discussion to promote understanding and inclusiveness.

PFLAG Winston-Salem and PFLAG Greensboro Celebrate Their Pride

PFLAG Greensboro and PFLAG Winston-Salem walked in the Winston-Salem Pride celebration on Saturday, October 15th. With an estimated 5,000 people in attendance, at least 1,000 people and over 26 groups marching in the parade, the event was a great celebration of Pride for this North Carolina town “defied expectations” according to QNotes, a North Carolina LGBT news and entertainment website.

Amidst the crowds, police stood by to ensure safety between the participants and any anti-LGBT protesters. “Just prior to the march, a short note was handed out to all of us who were marching…We were directed not to make any gestures, have conversations, or even make eye contact [with the protestors]…The police presence was very visible, but not at all obtrusive,” said PFLAG member Linda Stroupe. Thanks to the support of local police and safety measures, the celebration went on without any problems.

Thomas Farmer, Chapter President of PFLAG Winston-Salem waved to the crowd of thousands from his chapter’s purple and white float, as the gathering of LGBT-sup

porters filled the streets. PFLAG marchers were greeted with cheers of “Thank you, PFLAG!” and encouraging claps from the joyful audience that was happy to see support from parents and friends.

“It was a beautiful day and a beautiful gathering,” Linda said. “Every time I allow myself to wonder if Pride marches have become passé or ineffective, I walk in another one, and am always reminded that the marchers are definitely important.” Three of the six members who carried the PFLAG Greensboro banner had never marched in a Pride celebration before. “Stepping out in public to affirm their commitment was a very meaningful and thrilling experience. [For] one woman...being a part of the march [was] one of the ways that she is choosing to live with more authenticity."

As a part of the celebration, PFLAG and Equality Winston-Salem co-sponsored a float for the local “High School Equality Club” of West Forsyth High School. The crowd hollered and cheered as the young students passed by shouting things like, “Look! It’s a high school float!” Their advisor and local PFLAG board member, Mary Baker, spoke of the impact the parade had on her students: “It was thrilling turning that corner for the adults, but it was life changing for the kids. Afterwards, several of my students teared up as they expressed how it will always be one of the most important days of their lives.”

Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach, an Air Force combat fighter pilot, is an American hero. Early in his career, he supported the liberation of Kosovo. Immediately following 9-11, he was handpicked as initial alert crew and in the following months flew numerous defense sorties over Washington DC. He flew in operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, earning an Air Medal for Heroism for risking his life while destroying an enemy ambush site under constant, heavy enemy fire.

Lt. Col. Fehrenbach also happens to be gay, and he was outed by a third party in May of 2008. After months of vacillation, he decided to fight his discharge from the Air Force under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT). He made numerous public appearances on television news shows and was featured in hundreds of newspapers, magazines, and publications.

In August 2010, Lt Col Fehrenbach filed a restraining order and injunction against the Department of the Air Force in the Ninth US Circuit Court, blocking his imminent discharge. He also filed a lawsuit, challenging DADT as unconstitutional. His case was one of four active cases that accelerated the repeal of the unjust law. He retired with full benefits on October 1, 2011.

Just eleven days later, Lt. Col. Fehrenbach told his fascinating story at the October meeting of PFLAG Dayton, to a packed house and standing ovation. In a wonderful stroke of luck, his extended family is from the Dayton area, and he brought his mother and sister with him to PFLAG. During his remarks, he commented on how much difference it made in this long struggle to have a supportive and encouraging family – the perfect message for a PFLAG audience.

Humboldt Pride!

Humboldt County Pride kicked off with a parade along the beautiful waterfront in Eureka, CA. However the day started much earlier for PFLAG Eureka. At 6am they were busy serving breakfast to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at the First Congregational United Church while the Sisters put on makeup and costumes in preparation for the parade and festival. In spite of the early morning, they were ready to go when the parade started. The parade was led by the Humboldt State University Marching Lumberjacks, in their traditional uniforms consisting of yellow logger's hardhats, suspenders, yellow t-shirts, green work pants, and boots, followed by the Sisters. Next came the Grand Marshal: PFLAG Eureka founder, president, and passionate activist, Linda Shapeero. Linda chose to dress as a fairy godmother, a choice everyone agreed was apropos. There were about 15 or so of us walking with the PFLAG contingent. I was surprised at the number of people along the route cheering for everyone and especially for PFLAG. Whether it’s San Francisco or Eureka, PFLAGers always get the biggest welcome.

During the festival, held at Halvorsen Park on the waterfront, Linda Shapeero was presented with the Outstanding Individual Award by the Humboldt Pride Organization. Linda has been a tireless and vocal advocate and her chapter has been front and center on many issues. She’s working on getting into the schools and talking about safe schools and providing information on LGBT issues. During the day, many people came by the PFLAG booth for information, to say hi, or just to say thanks. We wrapped up and packed up about 4pm. Everyone agreed that the event drew more people than last year. Always a good sign especially in a remote part of California!

Catch up with...PFLAG 2010 National Scholarship Winner Kevin Kendrick!

Kevin Kendrick is an outstanding 2010 PFLAG Scholarship recipient who continues to promote LGBT equality. In high school, Kevin worked as a 4-H counselor and also volunteered at his local elementary school to educate and inspire all students, especially LGBT students, to be confident and proud of themselves.

Now, at the University of Washington, Kevin continues to be actively engaged in uplifting LGBT students and moving equality forward. Since receiving the scholarship, Kevin has joined Delta Lambda Phi, a fraternity for gay, bi and progressive men. Not only does he hold two leadership positions in DLP, but he also works with the fraternity to assist the school in dealing with queer issues.

Kevin is excited to explore possible internship opportunities in his junior and senior years, but right now his attention is focused on pursuing a double major in political science and philosophy. He also plans to continue his work at the graduate level with hopes of receiving a PhD and becoming a professor. In addition to his academic studies, Kevin volunteers at Lifelong AIDS Alliance, a local organization that helps feed and dress persons who have been infected with HIV/AIDS.

His support network at college is very important to him, so you will find Kevin enjoying swimming, hiking, the outdoors and hanging out with his friends.

Kevin says, “I personally never found anything that bad, but after coming to college I was opened up to a whole new world where you are appreciated and loved for being just the person you are; I can’t think of anything better than that.”

We are proud of Kevin for his enduring commitment to moving equality forward!

PFLAG South Orange County's Meeting and Fundraiser

Today we hear from Barbara Pisetsky, President of PFLAG South Orange County.

I would like to share with everyone what a great meeting and fundraiser we had on Wednesday, September 21st.

I was anticipating approximately 15 people to attend the fundraiser at California Pizza Kitchen at the Laguna Hills Mall. The flyer was valid all day but I figured most people would time it to have dinner there prior to our meeting.

I called ahead to make reservations, thinking it would be fun for everyone to sit together. I was facing the door and more and more people kept arriving. We had to add an additional table plus additional chairs to our table of 15. We ended up with about 25 attendees! It was so much fun....a great time to socialize and an easy way to increase our treasury. Our chapter will receive 20% of the net sales.

Then, at our meeting we had 48 people show up, including 13 new people!

We signed up 2 new families and 2 new individual memberships, and we also had a donation basket at our hospitality table. We took in roughly $300 over and above what we made from the food.

We have seen our chapter grow considerably over the last 3 years, and have even had to move to a larger facility. We hope that this successful meeting is an indication that we are continuing to grow.

Dear PFLAG National:

Thank you so much for the scholarship that you awarded me. Aside from the obvious financial boost it gives me, it is such an honor to have my work recognized by an organization as important as PFLAG. PFLAG is so crucial to the advancement of LGBT people in society, in that the straight allies are the backbone of the gay community. Without the support of our family and friends, the movement would go nowhere.

Not only does PFLAG help the movement on a socio-political level, it helps on the individual level and on the family level. It helps individuals come out, because they are able to see that there is an organization of people who are straight but accepting. They can see that though there may be an organized mass of people in our country that opposes gay people, there is a large faction of people who do not. It also helps families (possibly those previously opposed to gay people) cope with the fact that they suddenly have a gay relative.

It, therefore, is such an honor to be recognized to one of the keystone organizations in our movement. Not only did PFLAG help bring my family to acceptance rather quickly, you have accepted me as an activist by honoring me with this scholarship. For that, I am extremely grateful.

This scholarship will allow me to have a higher education at Stanford University, an education that will open up many opportunities in the future for my career as a politician, and subsequently my work in advancing the rights of LGBT people and our supporters.

Thank you, again, for everything you have given me through the years, and I look forward to a continued relationship with PFLAG in the future.

Latino Panel Shares Stories of Exclusion and Harassment

We are honored to hear today from Boulder, Colorado resident Jean Hodges, a board member of PFLAG National and the chairperson of the PFLAG National Regional Directors Council:

How can we address the cultural gap between the white majority in our city with the marginalized people of color in our county? That has been a perennial concern of our chapter, just as it is for many PFLAG chapters around the country. PFLAG has for too long been an organization of white, mostly middle class persons, working within a traditional model of expecting LGBT persons and their families to come to us. It’s worked well since our national founding in l972 to serve people who are like us. The times are different since we have come to realize that there are many people who need the support that PFLAG offers but whose culture or religion makes it difficult for them to come to a traditional PFLAG meeting.

PFLAG Boulder recently made a huge step toward walking our talk to reach out to our largest marginalized group, the Latino families and individuals of all ages in our county. We decided to meet where Latinos would be comfortable and more likely to attend a PFLAG program. We changed our venue last month from the usual downtown Boulder church parlor to the storefront “Progressive Center” on Main Street in Longmont, some 12 miles from our habitually comfortable space.

We entitled the program “Segregation, Racism and Homophobia: Latino Perspectives” a topic we hoped would draw a large cross-section of persons to listen and respond to a panel of five uniquely different Latino persons. We partnered with Jessy Perez, a young woman who is committed to LGBT equality and reaching out to a diverse community, and asked her to invite the panelists she thought would best represent a spectrum of experiences to be shared. Jessy also used her networking capacity to spread the word via email and posting flyers within centers and organizations that served Latino persons.

The panelists were amazing—honest in sharing the pain of how they felt excluded from social circles in public schools. One panelist share that there were only four or five Mexican heritage kids, all of them cousins in a high school of 1500 whites with one token black student. Attending the University of Colorado in the l980’s was no better when Chicano activism demonstrating for civil rights brought harsh retaliation. The resulting internalized oppression in those settings made family cohesion even more important. Retreating to family unity was about safety and self-esteem.

A very bright, charismatic, young Mexican-American who moved to the U.S. when he was younger, told how he struggles everyday with his sense of exclusion because of economic hardship which required moving often when he was a child. He attended ten different schools because his family couldn’t pay the rent increases as Denver neighborhoods became more gentrified. An ally to the LGBT community, he told us that a gay cousin helped him to come out as “undocumented”. He now works courageously for social change. He challenged us to look at our privilege as citizens and become involved in immigration reform.

Another panelist moved from Mexico with his mother when he was twelve. He trained himself to lose his accent to become more American in speech, dress and mannerisms. His resulting new friendships made his Mexican peers accuse him of being “too white”. Even so, he was aware that he was treated differently from his white friends. Once again we heard, “Diversity is not welcome or appreciated in ‘progressive Boulder’.

The story that deeply touched me in particular was about a boy who attended a local high school where he was harassed for being perceived as gay. He mostly sat quietly and tried to be invisible because he was afraid of being outed. Even though he didn’t learn Spanish at home, he held the anti-gay Latino beliefs of his mother. He had no role models to help him to understand what “gay” meant or how to accept himself. He felt suicidal and desperately alone. He visited the family doctor and asked to be castrated so he wouldn’t have to deal with his “bad” sexual attraction. The doctor told him that there was nothing wrong with him and handed him a PFLAG pamphlet. That was his first experience in learning to accept himself just as he was born. He said he would be eternally grateful to PFLAG for helping him to accept himself. It took some ten to fifteen years for his family to accept him, but his mother spoke up at the meeting to say that she has moved from her anti-gay religious position of denial to accepting that being gay is not a choice. She understands that her son was “born that way” and “I love him just the way he is.” Her fervent support made me smile because she was the picture of a “PFLAG mom.”

I looked around the room as the panelists finished to observe that the crowd had grown to some fifty people of all ages, two-thirds of whom were Latino. I rose quickly to tell them that this was only a beginning, that PFLAG was all about keeping families with LGBT children together. “We all love our kids!” I said. I told them that we wanted to start a support group where parents could come, talk to one another in Spanish or English to know that they were not alone. That is our dream—to grow our chapter by reaching out to where the people are who need PFLAG.

Our dream will surely become a reality because a new door has opened.

A Meeting with NC Senator Kay Hagan

Today we hear from Linda Stroupe, a PFLAG mom from Greensboro, NC…and our South Atlantic Regional Director:

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with one of my North Carolina Senator's, Kay Hagan, in her Greensboro office. I was joined with PFLAG transgender advocates including, Joan and David Parker, along with three women, Maddie Goss, Marcia Rogers, and Roberta Dunn, who shared stories about transgender employment discrimination and how that adversely impacted their lives.

The meeting went very well. We had been told that we were allocated fifteen minutes and that it was possible that Senator Hagan would have to cancel at the last minute. Despite these time constraints, she not only met with us, but asked thoughtful questions and spent almost 45 minutes talking about the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) (S. 811/H.R. 1397).

Senator Hagan started the meeting by telling us how disappointed she was about the actions of the NC Senate and House last week when they voted to put "protection of marriage" on the NC ballots in next May's Republican primary elections.

The main purpose of our meeting today was to share personal stories to help Senator Hagan understand how difficult life in the workplace is for LGBT people, especially transgender and gender non-conforming people, and to encourage her to consider signing on as a cosponsor for ENDA. As you may know, the Senator is already a cosponsor of the Student Nondiscrimination Act, and we are very hopeful she will soon support ENDA as well.

I had met Senator Hagan in person several times before, and we are both Greensboro residents, Wake Forest University graduates (graduate school for her, undergraduate for me), and Presbyterians. She was very receptive to all of us, and we think our visit will help her continue to "evolve."

PFLAG Long Island and the Public Library - A Great Collaboration for Pride!

Last year, PFLAG Long Island member Ronna Weiss--a long-time supporter of her public library--began noticing the displays on different topics that were featured each month in her local library branch. The glass museum case was constantly changing to highlight books and resources on such topics as gardening, Earth Day, Back to School, home improvement, Black History Month, travel, etc. She decided that it would be a great addition to include an LGBT focused display in June for Pride Month.

Ronna began by speaking to a librarian who was able to direct her in how to make the request. In September 2010 Ronna sent a letter to the director of the library asking for a Pride display in June 2011. She hoped that the display would bring attention to the resources that the library had on the topic and provide a way for the library to be inclusive to a wider audience. The director agreed and connected Ronna with the librarian that was in charge of the displays.

The librarian and Ronna sat down together to come up with a list of books and resources to be featured. The librarian printed up famous LGBT quotes and Ronna provided rainbow flags to complete the display.

After hearing about her work in her own library other chapter members and friends began reaching out to other libraries to make the same request.

This past June, ten libraries featured displays for Pride month! Some of the displays were more extensive than others, but all provided visibility and much needed resources. Ronna’s rabbi learned of the project and asked her to put together a display for her synagogue’s library, a wonderful meeting of faith and inclusivity!

The chapter is preparing to send out letters again for next year’s display. Through the project Ronna has learned that most libraries plan their calendars and displays many months or even a year in advance.

Now is the time to reach out to your own public library and request a display for June.

Catch up with...PFLAG 2010 National Scholarship Winner Vivienne Chen!

PFLAG National was honored to award Vivienne Chen with a 2010 PFLAG National Scholarship to recognize her hard work and dedication to the LGBT community as a straight ally. In high school, Vivienne participated in numerous projects aimed at moving equality forward in her community, such as participating in local LGBT organizations and fighting for marriage equality in California. PFLAG recently caught up with Vivienne and was amazed to see how flawlessly she is handling life as a college student, while continuing her work as an ally.

Vivienne’s academic achievements earned her acceptance into Princeton University, and she was pleasantly surprised to find out that Princeton was ranked one of the top 20 LGBT friendly colleges by The Advocate.

Since receiving the scholarship, Vivienne has made some amazing strides as an ally. One such accomplishment is her work at the Princeton LGBT Center as a staff member. Her current role has led to numerous projects including participating in LGBT-themed poetry slams and panel discussions on the concept of being "Too Gay". She has also used her advocacy skills to promote safer sex education, campus condom usage, and increased awareness of LGBT literature and cinema. A highlight for Vivienne this year was meeting PFLAG National Executive Director, Jody Huckaby, at a discussion on the state of the LGBT movement.

Vivienne also led the push for Princeton students to create and It Gets Better video after death by suicide of a student at Rutgers. The video has received thousands of views on YouTube.

Next year, Vivienne will work as an LGBT Peer Educator and help incoming LGBT freshman and allies adjust to life on campus.

On top of her outstanding advocacy work, Vivienne’s intended major is English with minors in Gender and Sexuality Studies (LGBT studies) and Creative Writing. Upon graduation, Vivienne hopes to be a journalist and advocate for social change. When she is not studying, Vivienne likes to dance, write and perform spoken word poetry.

Vivienne says, “Change starts with you: as young people, we forget that we are partially responsible for creating the world that we inherit. You make it better.”

PFLAG National thanks Vivienne for committing her efforts to creating equality for all, and congratulates her on her stellar academic achievements and LGBT equality advocacy leadership.

Closets Are For Clothes...

Lori Brown, PFLAG mom and future chapter president for PFLAGBellevue in Washington, writes about her experience and unique idea for changing hearts and minds.

I got involved in PFLAG over two years ago when my son Ian came out to my husband and I during his winter break from college. The next summer, our family attended the Renton River Days Parade in Renton, Washington, a tradition we haven't missed in 20 years. That year I was sitting next to Ian when this "Closet" float came down the street surrounded by a group of parents. When I read what the sign said, I clapped loudly. The next thing I knew, someone offered me a hot pink sticker that read, "You Are Loved By PFLAG." I went home from the parade and found the web site I needed. When I attended my first meeting, I learned that PFLAG Bellevue had been in the parade for at least 3 years. I had never noticed! I guess I didn't notice until I needed it. I'm involved because I want to be sure that someone will be there for others when they need us.

When my son Ian was in preschool, I was one of the moms who volunteered to help put together about 15 memory scrapbooks for the parents. Volunteers were assigned two-to-three pages to design for the book. I remember one of the pages I was given: The “Trip to the Pumpkin Patch” page. I collected Halloween stickers for 15 pages, cut out colorful letters, and then personalized everything by adding the photos that were taken of the children for that special event.

The first year I tabled for PFLAG I was worried because I didn’t really think I knew enough about the organization to do a good job. I knew if I just sat back and read a book while people went by browsing through pamphlets, I would miss an important opportunity; the chance to change hearts and minds. Wendy Wartes, longtime member of PFLAG Bellevue, suggested that I talk about my son.

That would be a piece of cake, I thought, especially if I had a picture! So I created a poster called, "Closets are for Clothes - Not our Kids." The theme of the poster is about coming out of the closet and into the sunshine – the shedding of one’s inner suppression and the rebirth that comes when one begins to proudly live in the truth. My poster has all the elements of those preschool memory scrapbooks. The white Seabird, a symbol of our peaceful civil rights movement, is part phoenix, for rebirth, and part peacock, for pride. This bird is carrying a hanger from a closet into the dazzling sunshine of life.

I think the" Closets are for Clothes - Not out Kids" poster with a child's picture on it is inspirational. I've carried the poster with me to tabling and speaking events. I have found it easy to change people's hearts once they know it is my son Ian who I am talking about. I think when someone in the LGBT community is no longer faceless, it will be harder to dismiss, fear, and/or hate.

Just like the pages of a memory book, colorful letters have been cut and pasted on the page. The hanger the Seabird is carrying has a colorful shirt on it…and that is where I placed the photo of Ian on the “Trip to the Pumpkin Patch.”. This PFLAG poster brings a child’s innocent face to the forefront. You can do this too with your own family photo.

Our personal pictures will also show that the LGBTQ community comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors. But most of all, I hope it will make it harder for others to look away. I hope it will make it harder for them to think of our loved ones as “the faceless, discard-able few…those strange, deviant beings”. It says, “Look at this child! How can you deny this child the rights other Americans take for granted?” Perhaps it will make it easier for others to see and understand the truth as we know it to be. Maybe then, they’ll understand why PFLAG members are so eager to carry out our mission. Maybe then--just maybe--they will begin to change their minds.

PFLAG LA Participates on LGBT-Focused Film Festival Panel

On Friday, August 19, PFLAG LA was invited to participate in a panel at the Artivist Film Festival at the famous Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood after a showing of the film Straight White Male.

The documentary, directed by and starring Tyler Erlendson, explores the long road of female-to-male transition, dealing with issues such as surgery, relationships, community involvement, and familial acceptance, and features prominent figures in the transgender community including Dr. Marci Bowers, Jamison Green, Max 'Wolf' Valerio, and Dr. Michael Brownstein.

The panel included director/star Tyler, local representatives of the transgender community, James Gilliam of the ACLU, and Steve Krantz, Director of PFLAG's Southern Pacific Region.

PFLAG Orlando and PFLAG National Team Up for Safe Schools!

PFLAG National would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the PFLAG Orlando chapter, which partnered with us at our booth for the 2011 National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Convention which took place at the Disney Coronado Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

PFLAG National has a long history of tabling and presenting workshops at national education conventions, and our Cultivating Respect: Safe Schools materials - are always a highlight.

We call on our chapters to help National at various times, and when the request for help went out to the Orlando chapter, they certainly delivered. Judy Wood of the Orlando chapter took the lead by recruiting and organizing the local volunteers for the convention. Judy was the primary contact for National on the ground and worked hard to make this National PTA Convention a huge success.

We would also like to thank Alesa and Glen Glazier, Javier Caballero, Jay Caballero, Judy and Andy Berry, Lynn Mulder, Pat Padilla, Sally and Scott Hewit for volunteering their time and energy.

PFLAG Hinsdale Fundraises for Local Homeless LGBT Youth

Back in June, PFLAG Hinsdale dedicated a meeting to raising awareness and money to advocate for homeless LGBT young people. The chapter held a screening of the documentary Fish Out of Water, the proceeds from which went to The Night Ministry.

The Night Ministry has been providing for homeless people since 1976. Their services include meeting the basic needs of food, health care, hygiene and housing. A mobile health bus provides service on the street at designated stops. Recently The Night Ministry was awarded a grant from the city of Chicago to open the first ever shelter specifically for homeless youth ages 18-24. The pilot program for the seasonal shelter operated from January to April of this year with plans to reopen this fall. The all gender shelter, including transgender youth, accommodates 20 people. To keep things fair a lottery system is used to assign a place. Many must be turned away.

Barbara Bolson of The Night Ministry accepted a check for $1,375 that was raised through donations for the event and contributions made by PFLAG Hinsdale.

PFLAG Owensboro's Home Church Ousted By Church Association

A Western Kentucky Baptist church group voted to kick out a church for its ties to PFLAG Owensboro. The chapter has held monthly meetings at the church for more than a year-- and the church's pastor says the vote won't stop that from continuing. Representatives from the association's 56 churches voted. The removal was approved by a final vote of more than 220 to just 24.

Back in February, over 100 people attended the first-ever Love is Love Valentine Party, hosted by PFLAG Oregon Central Coast. The event provided an opportunity for young, old, gay, straight to share an afternoon of romantic music and poetry at Oregon Coast Community College.

This was a real community event, which included volunteers from area Welcoming (LGBT-friendly) Churches, including Atonement Lutheran, St. Luke’s & St. Stephen’s Episcopal, and Toledo United Methodist. A musician played romantic piano favorites as guests made Valentines for their partners and other loved ones, selecting treats from a table loaded with brownies, fudge, chocolate-covered strawberries, and truffles. Couples, families and friends sat for Sweetheart Photos.

There was lots of entertainment, including Women of Note, poetry-reading teens Quitze Pilling and Jordan Ostrum, and singer Avery Heater. Other performers included dancer Janet Sutherland, singers Barbara Turrill and Linda Yapp, and Rhonda Flame. Akia Woods’ medley of love songs was torchy and touching, and her performance of an adaptation of “Do You Love Me?” for the mixed LGBTA audience brought down the house. Especially moving was PFLAG members Dora Weaver, Deb Lyman, Reatha Ryan, read selections highlighting aspects of love.

PFLAG Chair Jeanne St.John and her partner of 29 years, Kae Bates, ended the program with a reading from their own 2004 “Multnomah Marriage,” a marriage later cancelled by court action that voided hundreds of Oregon marriages.

Responses to this groundbreaking Valentine Party were immediate and positive, and it seems as though this PFLAG chapter has really started a trend! Love is Love after all.

PFLAG Pueblo's Scholarship Program

PFLAG Pueblo has a nearly 10-year history of offering scholarships through the chapter. Starting back in 2002 with a simple yard sale as the funding event, the program has flourished, even as its main funding source hasn't changed...though the yard sales have gotten bigger over the years! Over the years, more than $15,000 has been paid out through this fund to Pueblo Community College, with more to come.

Thanks to the proceeds from the sale - as well as donations from a few "consistent donors," according to PFLAG Pueblo Chapter President Lou Mercer, "...the scholarship program is going strong! We accept donations which we sell at the yard sale and on Ebay. And we work with a group at the local college who provide backbone for heavy lifting. Sadly, the church where we've always held our sale is now for sale itself, but we're already looking for a new home."

Longtime member Ross Barnhart adds, "It also helps that our chapter expenses are very low, so we really emphasize donations for the scholarship fund. We spend roughly five times as much money on scholarships each year as we do on all of our other chapter expenses combined, if not more."

Now that's a great use of funds!

Castro Valley Pride Rally

Today we hear from PFLAG Danville/San Ramon chapter President Keith Beck on an unexpected turnout at a local pride rally - we love a good surprise!

Castro Valley held its Pride parade on Saturday, July 23rd. Originally, intended to be a march with about 30 participants, it became apparent as more people started arriving that this small march was becoming something much bigger. Suddenly, we had a Pride rally with an estimated 300+ people attending.

The event was organized by three local teens - and how proud they must have been with the turnout!

Our chapter was represented by seven members and three relatives of members. We set up our tent and table, handed out information about our chapter and I was asked to speak about PFLAG. Our next meeting takes place on August 15th, and we will likely have several new attendees thanks to this great event!
